Family Dog Basic Training classes are fun, positive reinforcement based beginner level obedience classes designed for socialized adolescent and adult dogs.

In these classes we cover basic obedience behaviors such as sit, down, come, stay and loose-leash walking. We will also cover how to deal with everyday management issues such as jumping up, excessive barking, fear of handling at the vet or groomers and self control around other dogs. All training is done using a positive reinforcement technique known as "clicker training".

The classes are sequential--you must successfully complete Level One before progressing on to the next level. Level One classes focus on the fundamentals of clicker training techniques. Level Two builds on the foundations learned in Level One, increasing the dog's responsiveness and reliability in the face of distractions. Both of these classes are filled with challenges for you and your dog. Before the end of each class, our instructors will assess your progress and readiness for the next level (Family Dog Level 1 can be repeated for a 10% discount on the original registration fee). It is important that training occur at a pace that is comfortable for both dog and handler. Becoming proficient in the skills taught in each of these classes will help you make your good dog into a great dog.

Level One classes: Come without your dog the first week so that we can teach you how to use the clicker and get your dog ready for the following week. Classes meet once per week for 8 weeks.
Instructors: Becky Jankowski, Don Jankowski, Linda Chiaramonte, Jennifer Carra, Susan Wagne

Level Two classes: This level of training builds on the behaviors learned in Level One. In this class, we will work on refining behaviors such as polite walking on a leash, polite greeting, and reliable recalls. We will be adding distractions to increase the dog's responsiveness in a variety of environments. Good manners will always be an emphasis-we want a dog that can be trusted to behave itself anywhere. We will also incorporate how to fade food lures and how to fade the clicker itself, once a behavior is reliably on cue. By the completion of Level Two, most dog owners will have achieved a level of control and responsiveness that they desire in a family pet. Prerequisite: Family Dog Level One.
Instructor: Becky Jankowski, Linda Chiaramonte
