Introduction to Animal-Assisted Therapy
This six-week class is designed for dog/ handler teams who are interested in becoming registered as Delta Society Pet Partners for animal-assisted activities and therapy work in health care or educational settings.  DOGS MUST HAVE SOLID BASIC OBEDIENCE SKILLS AND GOOD MANNERS ALREADY IN PLACE: SIT / DOWN / STAY / COME / HEELING ON A LOOSE LEASH , ETC.  This course will NOT cover those basic skills.  Course work includes a discussion of the differences between animal-assisted activities and animal-assisted therapy, as well as a review of the basic skills required for each type of visit.  The course also covers handler responsibilities, interaction techniques for therapy visits and management of risk management issues.  Each class session will include training techniques to prepare the dog for the healthcare and / or educational  environment.  A practice Delta registration test will be given on the last day of class, with feedback on the dog / handler team’s readiness for an actual Delta test. The course fee includes the Delta Society Team Training manual, required for registration as a Delta Society Pet Partner  The class does NOT include the actual Delta Pet Partner evaluation test.  This will be scheduled later for a small additional fee.
